Allan Moyle’s Times Square stars Trini Alvarado as Pammy, the quiet and sheltered daughter of a prominent politician, and Robin Johnson as Nicky, a charismatic streetwise troublemaker. In the film’s unrealistic but somehow believable urban fantasy, the girls team up, creating a home for themselves in a warehouse on the West Side piers, and pursue various wild antics together against the gritty urban backdrop of Times Square, with Tim Curry’s radio deejay Johnny LaGuardia presiding over the entire adventure. The original script had numerous scenes and plot elements that developed a sense of proto- lesbian romance; these were all significantly cut. Despite the excision of explicit lesbian content, Nicky and Pammy are decidedly not interested in boys, and the romantic tone and tension in their interactions is undeniable. Their anarchic chemistry is also underscored by one of the greatest rock and roll soundtracks of all time, featuring Patti Smith, the Pretenders, Talking Heads, the Ramones, Roxy Music and Suzi Quatro.

In 2024, the long-thought lost 16mm reels of Tom Petty in Cameron Crowe’s first film, “Heartbreakers Beach Party”, were finally found. The classic ’80s documentary captures Tom Petty and the band in 1982-1983 as they finish, promote, and tour around the “Long After Dark” album (their final with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine). After its initial airing on MTV in 1983, the film was deemed too experimental and abruptly pulled from the air. In the more than 40 years since, it has become folklore to fans, musicians and within the entertainment industry – even credited with inspiring scenes in Spinal Tap.

In 2003, eight Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived in it for four years, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even constructed a wall, smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants–a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification, a clubhouse to coordinate artistic charity, and finally, a 750 square foot “F you” to The Man.

For over 50 years, the venerable French restaurant La Maison Troisgros has held three Michelin stars. That’s nearly as long as the career of filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, age 93, who embedded himself at the restaurant for several weeks in the spring of 2022.

Wiseman has spent his career documenting the inner workings of institutions. The bulk of his work is set in the US, but he has long been drawn to France, spending a few youthful years in Paris in the 1950s and, more recently, making the city his home base. For this new film, he travels outside Lyon to the town of Roanne.

The phrase menus plaisirs translates to “small pleasures”–and this film is rich with them. Wiseman explores the rarefied world of the Troisgros family, who have operated their establishment for four generations. He and his cameraman James Bishop observe the restaurant’s owners and workers from multiple perspectives. They catch the place in a moment of transition as long-time proprietors Michel and Marie-Pierre gradually pass the reins to their son Cesar. In the kitchen, the chefs operate like artists in their handling of exquisite dishes. In the dining room, the staff address all guests as “Madame” and “Monsieur.” The place attracts people who care deeply about food, savouring each dish with their eyes, noses, and smartphones.

You may never get to visit La Maison Troisgros yourself, but for the nearly four hours of this film, you can soak up the atmosphere at an unhurried pace.

Between the Easter holiday observed by some members and a lack of movies that caught my eye, we’ll be taking this weekend off. But the plan is for the film club to return ~weekly as long as it is safe to do so.

Greetings, all! I hope you all have been well and that you’ve had a chance to get vaccinated (assuming you are able to)! I’m really looking forward to seeing you in the next few months as we start to reenter some approximation of normal society! I’m not exactly sure when the club will return, but it seems sooner than it has in a long while.

Until then, I come bearing news: Our friends over at the Independent Film Festival Boston is about to begin its 2021 festival, which due to COVID-19 is 100% virtual this year. But it is no less ambitious than the usual Spring extravaganza, and a welcome return after having to skip last spring!

Tickets are on sale now, and the lineup looks great! It seems like most (all?) of the offerings have a 48-hour streaming window, so it should be somewhat easier to fit the festival into your plans.

It has been suggest that we have a follow-up club zoom after the festival to discuss it, and I think that’s a great idea. Perhaps we should do it May 23rd (to give stream stragglers a chance to catch up)? Leave a comment below if you’re interested in that. And if you have opinions about how the club should return to in-person events please leave a comment too!

I sent a note a few weeks ago letting you know about the IFFBoston Fall Focus, which is currently in full swing. There are six films available for you to stream right now (and you will be able to continue to screen them for a few days, details atÂ iffboston.org).

I originally suggested we get together for a video meetup tonight, but I dropped the ball on that. So letâ€™s have a video meetup next Sunday 11/8 at 7pm. Â We will use the same Jitsi meeting link that we used a few months ago. I sent that out (and will again) on the mailing list, but if you need it just reach out! (I’m avoiding posting it here to reduce troll potential)

I’ve decided that we will “meet” via video chat AFTER the Q&A, and we will be using Jitsi Meet. It will work right in your browser, but they also have mobile apps if you want to use your phone or tablet. Links to those apps are available on the Jitsi site.

I will send the meeting code out via email on Sunday afternoon, so if you have already filled out the survey from last week, you are all set. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Long time, no see!

I’ve had a few members reach out asking if there’d be any interest in doing virtual Sunday Night Film Club meetings. So let’s give it a shot!

Heads Up! IFFBoston Screening for 4/27 - FORT TILDEN

The Independent Film Festival of Boston starts this coming Wednesday, 4/23 at the Somerville Theater and quickly spreads to the Brattle, Coolidge and UMass Boston.

I (Sean) highly recommend you see as many movies as you can during the festival… Â It is rare that a film festival of this quality and size is still so accessible by the average movie fan as opposed to industry insiders. Â I wrote this blog post a few years ago (and have updated it since) about my tips on best enjoyingÂ IFFBoston.

The SNFC always chooses on of the Sunday screenings during the festival as its film, and this year is no exception.Â This year we will be seeing FORT TILDEN at the Somerville Theatre. Â It is highly recommended that you purchase tickets in advance as the festival can get quite popular.

Brattle Theatre Kickstarter!

Our friends over at the Brattle Theatre are running a Kickstarter campaign to upgrade to Digital Projection as well as replace their decrepit HVAC system. Â They have a rad selection of rewards for the various levels.

An early heads up: The movie for 12/16 (not this week) will be The Hobbit in High Frame Rate (48fps) 3D at Fenway at 7pm. Â This is twice the usual frame rate of a normal film, even higher than television. Â It is the first film being released in this format, so it should be interesting.

This is opening weekend of a big film, you should be sure to grab tickets ahead of time.

2011 Independent Film Festival of Boston: 4/27-5/4

TheÂ 9th Annual Independent Film Festival of Boston runs from April 27th through May 4th, andÂ tickets and passes are now on sale! Â This festival is truly great and anyone who is a fan of movies really should head over to theÂ schedule and learn about what is showing. Â Many other cities have their own film festivals, but IFFBoston is really catered to the general moviegoing audience in Boston. Â Many of the screenings often have special guests and Q&A sessions, and there are also some panel discussions and parties. Â Of course, if you’re like me, you’ll feel like the parties are just distracting you from seeing more movies.

The official club selection for the festival isÂ “Another Earth” at 7:30pm on Sunday, May 1st. Â I’ll send out the usual newsletter that week, but I wanted to give those of you who are interested a head start, as tickets often sell out.

Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, “It’s basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed”

The Magnetic Fields have never made it easy for those who would categorize their music. Originally labeled Â“art popÂ” musicians when their first album contained no guitar, they have since continued to befuddle genre watchdogs with a quirky blend of synth, strings, experimental percussion, pop overtones, folk undertones, and, of course, that magical special ingredient: Stephin MerrittÂ’s deep, lulling vocals. MerrittÂ’s tone massages a catalog of richly poignant lyrics that are quite the rare find in the pop-music thicketÂ—often most notable for their delicate simplicity.

On the other hand, Merritt himself has never made it easy for those who would categorize him. His intense demeanor has been the subject of many a sour rumor over his 20-plus-year career. Some of these ill reports he may indeed have earned through antisocial behavior. Some, however, were bitter and undeserved cutsÂ—the price he suspects he must pay for being Â“a high-profile sitting duck.Â”

Directors Kerthy Fix and Gail OÂ’Hara provide us with comfortable, homey access to Merritt and the most important, grounding influence in his life: his decades-long friendship with his chipper musical collaborator Claudia Gonson. On his home turf, in the apartment that has doubled as the studio for the lionÂ’s share of his recordings, Merritt is anything but prickly or uncooperative. He is a reflective, passionate, and even playful artist who is producing many of the great songs of his generation.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes – including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (ChloÃ« Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) – and forges a friendship with another fledgling superhero, Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). When a successful British ghostwriter, The Ghost, agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang, his agent assures him it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. The Ghost flies out to work on the project, in the middle of winter, to an oceanfront house on an island off the U.S. Eastern seaboard. But the day after he arrives, a former British cabinet minister accuses Lang of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA-a war crime. As The Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA-and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind

The bond between longtime rivals Marc and Kim, which defies both KimÂ’s gender and MarcÂ’s pedigree, exists as the fascinating heart of the film, and is orbited by a colorful, articulate cast of characters, including jailhouse chaplains, Montana farmers, intrigued high school classmates, and Orson WellesÂ’ soul-mate Oja Kodar, among others. Carol, the remarkably resilient mother who accepts her childrenÂ’s surprises with grace and optimism, provides a strong backbone for the family, as well as a clear-eyed entry-point to this drama of Wellesian proportions. Independent Cinema and Upcoming Events

I wanted to take this opportunity to ask you a favor as well as let you know about some upcoming events. Hopefully these infrequent bulletins, outside of the normal weekly newsletter, don’t rub you the wrong way. (And this week’s newsletter is still to come, either later today or tomorrow)

First off, I’d like to let all of you know that our local non-profit theaters need your support:

The Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square is probably our greatest repertory resources in the area. Aside from their repertory runs, they are also a popular location to premiere first-run indie films. Add to that a fantastic balcony, beer and wine served at the concession, and an awesome location, and it really is one of my favorite places in the city to catch a film. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is another beautiful non-profit theatre, with several screens featuring first-run independent films as well as classics. It is a favorite destination of the club, and have a membership level that may be of special interest to film club members: If you join at the Cinematographer level you get FREE admission to regular films on Sundays after 6pm! Along with the usual in-theatre benefits you get to joining either of these features, you will also get discounts at area stores and restaurants as well as special member offers from time-to-time. But more important than any hard benefits, you will be supporting two truly independent area venues.

I also wanted to mention that the 2010 Independent Film of Boston ( IFFBoston) is approaching! It will run from April 21st to the 28th, so save the dates!

The Coolidge continues it’s long-running “Science on Screen” series on March 15th with Christopher Guest’s classic, “Best in Show”. Before the film, Dr. Nicholas H. Dodman, BVMS, MRCVS, one of the world’s most noted veterinary behaviorists, explores the sometimes curious bond between people and their dogs. More information is available here.

“A paraplegic ex-marine finds a new life on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet’s indigenous Na’vi race in this ambitious digital 3-D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron’s first dramatic feature since 1997’s Titanic, follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a war veteran who gets called to the depths of space to pick up the job of his slain twin brother for the scientific arm of a mega corporation looking to mine the planet of Pandora for a valued ore. Unfortunately the biggest deposit of the prized substance lies underneath the home of the Na’vi, a 10-foot tall, blue-skinned native tribe who have been at war with the security arm of the company, lead by Col. On a chance meeting after getting separated from his team, Jake’s Avatar is rescued by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a Na’vi princess, who brings him into her tribe in order to give the humans a second chance at relating to this new environment. Director Paolo Sorrentino’s audacious and inventive biopic of Italian parliamentarian (and “Senator for Life”) Giulio Andreotti doesn’t make the Byzantine world of modern Italian politics any less confusing (non-Italian viewers may want to brush up on the topic beforehand), but the film illuminates, in great emotional detail, important events surrounding an early-1990s investigation in which the perpetual statesman was accused of having Mafia ties. The case was appealed and overturned several times, and Andreotti never served prison time, but it effectively marked the end of his centrist Christian Democratic party and forever changed the age-old relationship between the Mafia and the Italian government. Sorrentino’s fanciful use of titles, quick edits, multiple-perspective flashbacks, slow motion, extreme close-ups, and sublime musical accents–as well as star Toni Servillo’s brilliantly stylized acting–convert this airless and sinister piece of world history into a dynamic tale of moral ambiguity and seemingly invulnerable political power. Servillo plays Andreotti as an arrogant, deadpan Puck–an Italian Richard Nixon replete with easily mimicable physical tics and the conviction of his own rightness. In the film’s most memorable scene, Servillo allows his ironic veneer to crack just once, in a molten monologue where, spit flying, he justifies “perpetrating evil to guarantee good.” Another chilling sequence intercuts a crucial Mafia hit with shots of a particularly tense and triumphant horse race, while a punky blues number roars in the background. Sorrentino’s controlled and masterly storytelling won the 2008 Prix du Jury at Cannes.
