“Set in the 1930s, this is the story of a group of explorers and documentary filmmakers who travel to the mysterious Skull Island (near Sumatra) to investigate legends of a giant gorilla named Kong. Once there, they discover that King Kong is a real creature, living in a massive jungle where creatures from prehistoric times have been protected and hidden for millions of years. As the explorers search for the great ape, their quest puts them up against both Kong and his dinosaur enemies. Ultimately, it is the attention of a beautiful human woman that soothes Kong long enough for him to be subdued by the explorers and shipped back to New York, where his bleak future involves being put on display in front of humans… but how long can even the mightiest shackles of man hold back an ape 25 feet tall?”

“From writer/director Stephen Gaghan comes Syriana, a political thriller
that unfolds against the intrigue of the global oil industry. From the
players brokering back-room deals in Washington to the men toiling in the
oil fields of the Persian Gulf, the film’s multiple storylines weave
together to illuminate the human consequences of the fierce pursuit of
wealth and power. As a career CIA operative (George Clooney) begins to
uncover the disturbing truth about the work he has devoted his life to, an
up-and-coming oil broker (Matt Damon) faces an unimaginable family tragedy
and finds redemption in his partnership with an idealistic Gulf prince. A
corporate lawyer faces a moral dilemma as he finesses the questionable
merger of two powerful U.S. oil companies, while across the globe, a
disenfranchised Pakistani teenager falls prey to the recruiting efforts of a
charismatic cleric. Each plays their small part in the vast and complex
system that powers the industry.”

“A wickedly funny thriller that takes moviegoers on a wild ride brimming with larceny, lust and lethal behavior. In icebound Wichita, Kansas, it’s Christmas Eve, and this year Charlie Arglist (John Cusack) just might have something to celebrate. Charlie, an attorney for the sleazy businesses of Wichita, and his unsavory associate, the steely Vic Cavanaugh (Billy Bob Thornton) have just successfully embezzled $2 million from Kansas City boss Bill Guerrard (Randy Quaid). But the real prize for Charlie is the stunning Renata (Connie Nielsen), who runs the Sweet Cage strip club. Charlie hopes to slip out of town with Renata. But as daylight fades and an ice storm whirls, everyone from Charlie’s drinking buddy Pete Van Heuten (Oliver Platt) to the local police begin to wonder just what exactly is in Charlie’s Christmas stocking - and the 12 hours of Christmas Eve are filled with surprises.”

“Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic is written by Sarah Silverman, directed by Liam Lynch, and produced by Heidi Herzon, Mark Williams and Randy Sosin. Lynch, the fastrising video and film director currently in production on the feature TENACIOUS D IN: THE PICK OF DESTINY, collaborated with Silverman to adapt her show to the screen. The film comprises Silverman’s performance before a live audience interwoven with stylish musical numbers and backstage intrigue. Bob Odenkirk, Brian Posehn and Silverman’s comedian/actor sister, Laura Silverman, make appearances along with Silverman’s band The Silver Men.

Silverman, who has been compared to the legendary Lenny Bruce, is known as one of the funniest and most provocative people in comedy. Despite the current political climate, in JESUS IS MAGIC she takes on such pitchblack topics as September 11 th , unwanted body hair, and the Holocaust, and spins them into decidedly unpolitically correct comedic gold. As she says in the film, “When God gives you AIDS, (and God does give you AIDS, by the way) make LemonAIDS.”

“In 1955, a tough, skinny guitar-slinger who called himself J.R. Cash walked into the soon-to-be-famous Sun Studios in Memphis. It was a moment that would have an indelible effect on American culture. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as deep and black as night, Cash sang blistering songs of heartache and survival that were gutsy, full of real life and unlike anything heard before. That day kicked off the electrifying early career of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix). As he pioneered a fiercely original sound that blazed a trail for rock, country, punk, folk and rap stars to come, Cash began a rough-and-tumble journey of personal transformation. In the most volatile period of his life, he evolved from a self-destructive pop star into the iconic “Man in Black” -– facing down his demons, fighting for the love that would raise him up, and learning how to walk the razor-thin line between destruction and redemption. As his music changed the world, Cash’s own world was rocked by the woman who became the love of his life: June Carter (Reese Witherspoon).”

“Good Night, and Good Luck.” takes place during the early days of
broadcast journalism in 1950’s America. It chronicles the real-life conflict
between television news man Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and Senator
Joseph McCarthy and the Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations
(Government Operations Committee). With a desire to report the facts and
enlighten the public, Murrow, and his dedicated staff - headed by his
producer Fred Friendly (George Clooney) and Joe Wershba (Robert Downey Jr.)
in the CBS newsroom - defy corporate and sponsorship pressures to examine
the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his
communist ‘witch-hunts.’ A very public feud develops when the Senator
responds by accusing the anchor of being a communist. In this climate of
fear and reprisal, the CBS crew carries on regardless and their tenacity
eventually pays off when McCarthy is brought before the Senate and made
powerless as his lies and bullying tactics are finally uncovered.

It tells of the murders of four members of a well-known farm family—the Clutters—in Holcomb, Kansas. Similar stories appear in newspapers almost every day, but something about this one catches Capote’s eye. It presents an opportunity, he believes, to test his long-held theory that, in the hands of the right writer, non-fiction can be compelling as fiction. What impact have the murders had on that tiny town on the wind-swept plains? With that as his subject—for his purpose, it does not matter if the murderers are never caught—he convinces The New Yorker magazine to give him an assignment and he sets out for Kansas. Accompanying him is a friend from his Alabama childhood: Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), who within a few months will win a Pulitzer Prize and achieve fame of her own as the author of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Though his childlike voice, fey mannerisms and unconventional clothes arouse initial hostility in a part of the country that still thinks of itself as part of the Old West, Capote quickly wins the trust of the locals, most notably Alvin Dewey (Chris Cooper), the Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent who is leading the hunt for the killers. Caught in Las Vegas, the killers—Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.) and Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino)—are returned to Kansas, where they are tried, convicted and sentenced to die. Capote visits them in jail. As he gets to know them, he realizes that what he had thought would be a magazine article has grown into a book, a book that could rank with the greatest in modern literature. His subject is now as profound as any an American writer has ever tackled. It is nothing less than the collision of two Americas: the safe, protected country the Clutters knew and the rootless, amoral country inhabited by their killers. Hidden behind Capote’s often frivolous façade is a writer of towering ambition. But even he wonders if he can write the book—the great book—he believes destiny has handed him. “Sometimes, when I think how good it could be,” he writes a friend, “I can hardly breathe.”

I try not to spam this site or the newsletter much, but this announcement from the Brattle Film Foundation seemed important enough to merit it. If you are in the position to help out this cause, please visit the Brattle’s online donation form.

The Brattle Film Foundation (BFF), the nonprofit organization that programs and operates the Harvard Square’s landmark cinema, the Brattle Theatre, announced the most important fundraising effort in its 52-year history. The PRESERVE THE BRATTLE LEGACY CAMPAIGN is a two-year fundraising effort that is necessary to sustain repertory film programming at the Brattle. The Phase One goal is to raise $400,000 by the end of 2005; the Phase Two goal is to raise another $100,000 by the end of 2006. If BFF is not successful at meeting the goals set by Phase One of the campaign, BFF will be forced to cease operations at the Brattle Theatre, effectively ending the 52-year legacy of repertory film programming at the Brattle. The Brattle Theatre has outlasted most arthouse cinemas in the country. While landmarks like St. Mark’s and Bleeker Street in New York closed their doors long ago, the Brattle has survived. Of the Brattle’s current situation, Creative Director Ned Hinkle had this to say: “Repertory film programming at the Brattle simply cannot survive without significant community support. Our current challenges can only be overcome with the involvement of community members who want to keep the tradition of film programming alive at the Brattle Theatre.”

“Louis Malle was just 23 when he was asked by author and undersea explorer Cousteau to help make a film that could act as an illustrated companion to his immensely popular book also entitled The Silent World. The film surpassed even the book in its popular impact, garnering an Oscar for Best Documentary and the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. A lyrical meditation on the mysteries of the physical world, and humankind’s tentative steps to explore them, the film follows Cousteau and his crew as they navigate the oceans; the underwater cinematography, much of it shot by Malle himself, is breathtaking, the brilliantly colored coral reefs serving as a stationary counterpoint to the teeming schools of sea life whizzing past them.”

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

“Director Terry Gilliam, who brought his magical storytelling talents to such films as Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, sets his sights on the Brothers Grimm, turning their life into a playfully grim fairy tale all its own. Set in early 18th century French-occupied Germany, The Brothers Grimm stars Matt Damon as Will Grimm and Heath Ledger as Jake Grimm, siblings who travel the countryside as snake-oil salesmen, convincing unsuspecting towns that they are haunted and agreeing to get rid of the demons–for a price. In the meantime, they set their tales down in writing, creating a wealth of oddball, offbeat, and frightening characters. But after they are caught by General Delatombe (Jonathan Pryce) and his sidekick, Cavaldi (Peter Stormare), they are sent to the tiny village of Marbaden to solve the mysterious disappearance of a number of young girls, placing them in the middle of a fantasy world unlike any they’d ever invented. They enlist the help of a peasant woman, Angelika (Lena Headey), and they set off for the evil forest to save the lives of the girls–and themselves. Gilliam has once again built a unique, entertaining land where anything can happen, and he throws in references to such Grimm tales as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and the Frog Prince for good measure. The movie also features Mackenzie Crook and Richard Ridings as the Grimms’ cohorts, Monica Bellucci as the Mirror Queen, and Julian Bleach and Bruce McEwan as two of Cavaldi’s henchmen.”

“During the harsh Antarctic winter an epic journey takes place every year. More astounding than Shackleton’s voyage of Endurance, this is the story of the indigenous Emperor Penguins, who march across the harsh landscape of Antarctica to find their mates and keep the journey going for new generations. Like last year’s hit Winged Migration, The March of the Penguins features astounding up-close footage of birds in action. While penguins may technically be stuck on the ground, they move with such unique grace and calm, walking steadfastly across the most inhospitable terrain, or sliding on their bellies, that you can’t help but root for them every step of the way. Gorgeous cinematography highlights the vast labyrinths of ice that cover of the South Pole, and prepare to be stunned by a never-before-seen underwater sequence that shows the penguins really flying - though the freezing ocean under the Antarctic ice. Director Luc Jacquet and his crew followed the penguins on their journey for 13 months, then cleverly edited the film to tell a narrative story that brings the journey to life through clever penguin dialogue. Filled with excitement, danger, adventure, romance, and gorgeous scenery, The March of the Penguins is a real-life epic.”

dogs, kindly monsters and Bogs of Eternal Stench. This classic children’s
story is well-loved by its fans for its amazing set design and thoughtful
lessons about growing up. And the five David Bowie songs are just as good as
you remember.”

This is the true story of a group of tough, competitive, and, yes,

A poetic and penetrating observation of how people struggle to connect with one another in an isolating and contemporary world. Christine (writer/director Miranda July) is a lonely artist who uses her fantastical artistic visions to draw her aspirations and objects of desire closer to her. Richard (John Hawkes, Deadwood), a newly single shoe salesman and father of two boys, is prepared for amazing things to happen. But when he meets the captivating Christine, he panics. In July’s modern world, the mundane is transcendent and everyday people become radiant characters who speak their innermost thoughts, act on secret impulses, and experience truthful human moments that at times approach the surreal.
“A new restart of the “Batman” franchise under the helm of “Memento” Director Chris Nolan and more in tone with the early “Batman: Year One” style comics. As a boy a young Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of his eyes, a trauma which led him to become obsessed with revenge but his chance is cruelly taken away from him by fate. After disappearing to the East where he seeks counsel with the dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra’s Al-Ghul, he returns to his now decaying Gotham City overrun by organised crime and dangerous individuals manipulating the system whilst the company he inherited is slowly being pulled out from under him. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, and a prototype armoured suit leads him to take on a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong - he becomes, Batman. In the new guise, and with the help of rising cop Jim Gordon, Batman sets out to take down the various nefarious schemes in motion by individuals such as mafia don Falcone, the twisted doctor/drug dealer Jonathan ‘The Scarecrow’ Crane, and a mysterious third party that is quite familiar with Wayne and waiting to strike when the time is right.”

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion. This showtime is earlier than we usually meet, and it hardly qualifies as “Night”, but it was the last showing of this classic film.

George Stevens’ classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming’s Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there’s any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe’s young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter’s lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett’s wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens’ meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs’ beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by Ladd, Heflin, Arthur, and de Wilde, in what many regard as the finest western ever made.

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

“Based on the book by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, director Alex Gibney (writer and co-producer of The Trials of Henry Kissinger) presents the inside story of one of the greatest business scandals in history, when top executives of Enron, America’s seventh largest company, walked away with over one billion dollars while investors and employees lost everything. Inside accounts and controversial tapes show the unimaginable personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy - and how their actions may shape our economy for years to come.”

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion (and I promise that this week that establishment WILL NOT be Longhorn. :P).

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times over many years and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers.

The introduction begins like this:

“Space,” it says, “is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mindboggingly big it is. I mean you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist, but that’s just peanuts to space. Listen …” and so on.

(After a while the style settles down a bit and it begins to tell you things you really need to know, like the fact that the fabulously beautiful planet Bethselamin is now so worried about the cumulative erosion by ten billion visiting tourists a year that any net imbalance between the amount you eat and the amount you excrete whilst on the planet is surgically removed from your bodyweight when you leave: so every time you go to the lavatory it is vitally important to get a receipt.)

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

“Escalating events begin when African-born U.N. translator Silvia Broome alleges that she has overheard a death threat against an African head of state, spoken in a rare dialect few people other than Silvia can understand. With the words “The Teacher will never leave this room alive,” in an instant, Silvia’s life is turned upside down as she becomes a hunted target of the killers. Placed under the protection of federal agent Tobin Keller, Silvia’s world only grows more nightmarish. As Keller digs deeper into his eyewitnesses’ past and her secretive world of global connections, the more suspicious he becomes that she herself might be involved in the conspiracy. With every step of the way, he finds more reasons to mistrust her. Is Sylvia a victim? A suspect? Or something else entirely? And can Tobin, coping with his own personal heartache, keep her safe? Though they must depend on one another, Silvia and Tobin couldn’t be more different. Silvia’s strengths are words, diplomacy and the subtleties of meaning, while Tobin is all about instinct, action and reading into the most primal human behaviors. Now, as the danger of a major assassination on U.S. soil grows and Silvia’s life hangs in the balance, Silvia and Tobin play out a gripping dance of evasion and revelation that keeps them both guessing as they race to stop a terrifying international crisis before it’s too late.”

Our old listserv at finkelhedron.org went down again, so I took this opportunity to move the mailing list to the host of the webpage ( warped.net). So from now on all mailing list subscription/unsubscription can be handled here. I believe I have updated all of the links on this webpage to reflect the new mailing list, but if you see one I forgot let me know.

Unfortunately, the last backup I had of the mailing list subscriptions was from early March, so if you’ve subscribed since then you will have to re-subscribe. Sorry for the hassle..

Don’t let the films of Danny Boyle fool you. The director of edgy hits like SHALLOW GRAVE, TRAINSPOTTING and 28 DAYS LATER isn’t really a cynic, and this enchanting and supremely charming family (yes - family!) fantasy proves it. Starting anew after the death of their mother, 9-year-old Anthony and 7-year-old Damian move to suburban Manchester with their dad. It is a time of readjustment, and while Anthony is ever practical, Damian uses his imagination to create an array of companions - the Catholic Saints, whom only he can see and hear. When one day a sack of stolen cash falls to him from the sky (or so it seems), Damian decides to donate the money to the poor and help his mother gain her sainthood in the afterlife. His actions lead to high comedy, with the right touch of genuine sincerity, in Danny Boyle’s first family classic.

Two friends wonder if there might be more between them when their lives both take a left turn in this romantic comedy. Terry (Joan Allen) is a middle-aged housewife and mother of four teenaged daughters and gets the shock of her life when her husband, without a word of warning, leaves them behind to move to Sweden with his secretary. Going through a bender of depression and alcohol, Terry finds herself commiserating with Denny (Kevin Costner), a former baseball star turned unenthusiastic radio personality who was her husband’s best friend and a frequent presence at the house. With both Terry and Denny feeling down in the dumps about recent events in their lives, the two find themselves drawn to one another, and while Terry fights the notion of a new romance, her daughters – Andy (Erika Christensen), Hadley (Alicia Witt), Emily (Keri Russell), and Lavender (Evan Rachel Wood) – have different ideas. The Upside of Anger was written and directed by Mike Binder, who also plays a supporting role as the producer of Denny’s radio show. - Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

If you’ve been itching to see Kevin Costner play another Baseball player, than this is the movie for you! - Sean Graham

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

Looks like an alien, sings like a diva - Klaus Nomi was one of 1980’s most profoundly bizarre appearances. He was a cult figure in the New Wave Underground scene who sang pop music like opera and brought opera to club audiences. He was a performer with a look so strong, that his first audiences went wild before he even opened his mouth. On the verge of international fame as a singer, he instead became one of the first prominent artists to die of AIDS. But the reaction Nomi provoked was so strong, that he is still unforgettable even 20 years after his death.

THE NOMI SONG is a story of love of music and love of performing at a time when it seemed as though everyone was struck by a sense of urgency to make something (anything) simply because they wanted to make the most of the limited time they felt they were given on this earth. It’s a story that grows out of a group of people who influenced him, loved him, felt pity for him or betrayed by him, yet above all, were inspired by him.

Nomi constructed his own myth out of elements so completely wrong, yet so deliberate, that it all seemed oddly possible. He was an alien amongst the outcasts, a tortured soul who also radiated optimism at a time when optimism was officially out of fashion. He was as much a genuine talent as he was the engine of his own destruction. His appeal is not easy to explain in words. He has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.

This silent film will feature live piano accompaniment by Yakov Gubanov. Look for Sean wearing a nametag in the building lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

“The close-up of the tear-stained face of Marie Falconetti in Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc is one of the most famous images in all of cinema. Based on authentic records of the eighteen-month-long trial of the fifteenth-century warrior-saint in Orlians, the film brings a rigorous formal style, exquisite cinematography, and striking architectural sets to bear on the moral questions that surround Joan, her judges, and her ultimate fate. Falconetti had never appeared in films before and would never act again, but her performance here is ranked among the greatest creations of cinema.”

WARNING: This film is rated NC-17, and those under 18 years old will not be admitted to the theatre. Consider this and the subject of the film when deciding whether or not to join us this Sunday. If you feel you might be offended, it might be a good week to take off (of course, you can always join up with us afterwards!).

" Inside Deep Throat examines the unanticipated lasting cultural impact generated by Deep Throat, a sexually explicit film first shown in a midtown Manhattan adult theatre in 1972 that quickly became the flashpoint for an unprecedented social and political firestorm. Generally considered the most profitable film of all time (produced for less than $25,000 but earning countless millions), the barely one-hour movie became compulsory viewing for millions of ordinary Americans and celebrities, as an individual’s fascination or repulsion identified his or her place in the cultural shifts of the time. Written and directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (Party Monster, The Eyes of Tammy Faye)"

always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for

“In a tribute to the resiliency of childhood, debut writers/directors Zana
Briski and Ross Kauffman offer a portrait of several unforgettable children who
live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as
prostitutes. Briski, a photographer, gives each child a camera and teaches them
how to take pictures, causing them to look at their world with new eyes.
Humorous and heartfelt, the film reveals the power of art and how beauty can be
found in the most unlikely of places. Winner of ten major film festival prizes,
including the 2004 Sundance Audience Award for Best Documentary. Academy Award
Nominee for Best Documentary Feature.”

for the film “The 10th
District Court: Moments of Trial”.

“The proceedings of a Paris courtroom are the basis for one of the most
striking nonfiction works to emerge from the continent in recent years.
Drawing from over two hundred appearances in the 10th District Courtroom,
all featuring the same steadfast judge, renowned photographer Raymond
Dipardon provides compelling, often humorous observations of a series of
misdemeanor hearings and sentencings. Using a simple, static formal
structure, he captures the subtler details of human behavior which reveal
the complexities of race, class, and gender in contemporary society.”
Directed by Raymond Dipardon.

Showtime is at 7pm, and I will be there about 15 minutes early wearing a
nametag reading “Sean”. The first few people who show up will get a
somewhat discounted ticket thanks to Corinna’s employee discount.

Welcome to the new Boston Sunday Night Film Club webpage! Sorry for the generic-looking page, but my talents lie elsewhere… My goal for this page was to be functional and easy-to-use (for you as well as us). Our new easy-to-remember URL will make life easier as well. :)

There are a few things I’d like to point out to you:

The mailing list information is the same for the time being, so if you’d like to subscribe (or unsubscribe) from the newsletter list visit this page ( Update: The mailing list finally moved to a more reliable server, so I updated that link to point to the new page).

I am working on a system that will let me post to the mailing list, the website, Craigslist, and LiveJournal all in one step. I don’t have all the kinks worked out just yet, but it will be nice once it’s finished off.

For those of you who prefer RSS/Atom feeds to mailing lists, feel free to subscribe to either our RSS or Atom feed.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the new site, but if not, I hope it is at least useful to you. If you have any comments or questions, please drop me a line
