The toughest fight of Muhammad Alis career was not against Sonny Liston or Joe Frazier in the ring, but in the court of public opinion when he refused to serve in the Vietnam War and was vilified as the fighter who would not fight for America. The ever-charismatic and outspoken Ali, born Cassius Clay, converted to Islam as a 22-year-old, following his mentor Elijah Muhammad of the controversial Nation of Islam. When he refused to serve in Vietnam on conscientious grounds he was banned from boxing and stripped of his title, as well as sentenced to a 5-year prison term. Ali appealed, supporting himself and his family with a nationwide speaking tour. In a fascinating inside scoop from a former Supreme Court clerk, the film reveals how the Justices went from initially not even planning to review Alis case, to eventually overturning it unanimously. The Trials of Muhammad Ali masterfully combines famous footage with previously unseen material to examine how one of the most celebrated sports champions of the 20th century risked his fame and fortune to follow his faith and conscience. This intricate, romantic thriller has already been hailed as one of the best films of 2013 after appearing at just a handful of festivals. The second feature from director/star Shane Carruth (his first was the cult indie time travel film Primer), UPSTREAM COLOR opens with a man preparing for something. Its not clear what until the film follows him to a bar where he abducts a woman (Seimitz) and submits her to a bizarre brainwashing regimen that includes passages from Thoreaus Walden and a weird parasitic worm. As the layers of the films narrative are pulled back, a strange and complex conspiracy is revealed that has permanently affected dozens of victims. But thats only the bedrock for what Carruth is actually after: constructing a deeply felt story of the relationship that develops between two of those victims. Stunning, emotional, surreal, and gorgeous, UPSTREAM COLOR is a film that well be talking about for a long time.

A LIAR?S AUTOBIOGRAPHY tells the story of Graham Chapman not with the usual talking heads and film clips but with an insane variety of animation techniques instead. Directors Bill Jones (son of Python Terry), Jeff Simpson, and Ben Timlett have edited together recordings of Chapman made before his death in 1989 alongside new recordings by several of his Python colleagues (minus Eric Idle) and created an episodic, probably-mostly-true account of Chapman?s life ? from his unhappy childhood, to his days in medical school, his bouts of serious alcoholism, his life as a libertine and openly gay man and, of course, his time with one of the most famous and influential comedy troupes of all time: Monty Python.

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the Boston SNFC! I posted a celebratory blog post over here.

Happy 10th Anniversary

Back on January 12th, 2003, the first meeting of the Boston Sunday Night Film Club, started by Heather, occurred. The club has now met 464 times, starting out with The Pianist and most recently seeing Zero Dark Thirty. While the club struggled a bit early on, these days we have a great core of people who come out regularly to watch and discuss movies. We’ve watched as members meet, get married and have children. That’s not to say we don’t have room for more. Feel free to join us any old Sunday, we’re always looking for new friends.

Many, many thanks to all of the people who have helped keep this club alive, especially to the coterie of “pinch-hitters” who have filled in when I’ve been unable to make it.
