A divorced and single parent, Eva (Julia Louis Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughters impending departure for college. She meets Albert (James Gandolfini) a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems almost perfect except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Mariannes Ex. ENOUGH SAID is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again.

The toughest fight of Muhammad Alis career was not against Sonny Liston or Joe Frazier in the ring, but in the court of public opinion when he refused to serve in the Vietnam War and was vilified as the fighter who would not fight for America. The ever-charismatic and outspoken Ali, born Cassius Clay, converted to Islam as a 22-year-old, following his mentor Elijah Muhammad of the controversial Nation of Islam. When he refused to serve in Vietnam on conscientious grounds he was banned from boxing and stripped of his title, as well as sentenced to a 5-year prison term. Ali appealed, supporting himself and his family with a nationwide speaking tour. In a fascinating inside scoop from a former Supreme Court clerk, the film reveals how the Justices went from initially not even planning to review Alis case, to eventually overturning it unanimously. The Trials of Muhammad Ali masterfully combines famous footage with previously unseen material to examine how one of the most celebrated sports champions of the 20th century risked his fame and fortune to follow his faith and conscience. Directed by Bill Siegel (The Weather Underground).

Jem Cohens moving new film features Mary Margaret OHara as a Canadian woman adrift in a foreign city who finds companionship when she meets a sympathetic museum guard. A gentle, thoughtful film simultaneously about a lot and nothing much, MUSEUM HOURS is a must see for any art lover or lover of great cinema.

In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer examines a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes. When the Indonesian government was overthrown in 1965, small-time gangster Anwar Congo and his friends led anti-communist death squads in the mass murder of over a million people. Anwar boasts of killing hundreds with his own hands, but he’s lived in his country with impunity ever since. When approached to make a film about their role in the genocide, Anwar and his friends eagerly complybut their idea of being in a movie is not to provide reflective testimony, but to dance their way through musical numbers, twist arms in film noir gangster scenes, and gallop across the prairies as yodeling cowboys. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, and a gripping conflict between moral imagination and moral catastrophe. Co-directed by Christine Cynn and Anonymous.

Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay is a mesmerizing journey into the world of modern magic and the small circle of eccentric geniuses who mastered it. At its center is the multitalented Ricky Jay, a best-selling author and historian, an acclaimed actor (House of Games), a leading collector of antiquarian books and artifacts, but above all a conjurer capable of creating a profound sense of wonder and disbelief. Deceptive Practice traces the story of Ricky’s achievement, from his precocious apprenticeship in Brooklyn, beginning at age 4, with his grandfather Max Katz, as well as Al Flosso, Slydini, and Cardini (all among the best magicians of the 20th century), to his extraordinary one-man shows on Broadway. Friends and collaborators appear, such as David Mamet and Steve Martin (who joins Jay in a hilarious turn on a vintage ’70s “Dinah Shore” TV show). Throughout, Jay demonstrates live on camera his mastery of sleight of hand. Viewers will gain not only a deep appreciation for the arduous and arcane demands of the magician’s craft, but also for the colorful use of language and storytelling central to the art.

One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, from the directors of Sweetgrass and Foreign Parts, LEVIATHAN is a thrilling, immersive documentary that takes you deep inside the dangerous world of commercial fishing. Set aboard a hulking fishing vessel as it navigates the treacherous waves off the New England coast the very waters that once inspired Moby Dick the film captures the harsh, unforgiving world of the fishermen in starkly haunting, yet beautiful detail. Employing an arsenal of cameras that pass freely from film crew to ship crew, and swoop from below sea level to astonishing birds-eye views, LEVIATHAN is unlike anything you have ever seen; a purely visceral, cinematic experience.

THE EAST, a suspenseful and provocative espionage thriller from acclaimed writer/director Zal Batmanglij and writer/actress Brit Marling (ANOTHER EARTH, IFFBoston 2011), stars Marling as former FBI agent Sarah Moss. Moss is starting a new career at Hiller Brood, an elite private intelligence firm that ruthlessly protects the interests of its A-list corporate clientele. Handpicked for a plum assignment by the companys head honcho, Sharon (Patricia Clarkson), Sarah goes deep undercover to infiltrate The East, an elusive anarchist collective seeking revenge against major corporations guilty of covering up criminal activity.

Determined, highly trained, and resourceful, Sarah soon ingratiates herself with the group, overcoming their initial suspicions and joining them on their next action, or jam. But living closely with the intensely committed members of The East, Sarah finds herself torn between her two worlds as she starts to connect with anarchist Benji (Alexander Skarsgard, True Blood) and the rest of the collective, and awakens to the moral contradictions of her personal life.

42 tells the story of two menthe great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickeywhose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseballs infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickeys hopes.

This intricate, romantic thriller has already been hailed as one of the best films of 2013 after appearing at just a handful of festivals. The second feature from director/star Shane Carruth (his first was the cult indie time travel film Primer), UPSTREAM COLOR opens with a man preparing for something. Its not clear what until the film follows him to a bar where he abducts a woman (Seimitz) and submits her to a bizarre brainwashing regimen that includes passages from Thoreaus Walden and a weird parasitic worm. As the layers of the films narrative are pulled back, a strange and complex conspiracy is revealed that has permanently affected dozens of victims. But thats only the bedrock for what Carruth is actually after: constructing a deeply felt story of the relationship that develops between two of those victims. Stunning, emotional, surreal, and gorgeous, UPSTREAM COLOR is a film that well be talking about for a long time.

Note: This is an RPX Real3D showing. If you would prefer a 2D showing there is one at 7:30 (but be sure to find me before the film so we can exchange contact info so you can find us afterwards).

They have a rad selection of rewards for the various levels.

A LIAR?S AUTOBIOGRAPHY tells the story of Graham Chapman not with the usual talking heads and film clips but with an insane variety of animation techniques instead. Directors Bill Jones (son of Python Terry), Jeff Simpson, and Ben Timlett have edited together recordings of Chapman made before his death in 1989 alongside new recordings by several of his Python colleagues (minus Eric Idle) and created an episodic, probably-mostly-true account of Chapman?s life ? from his unhappy childhood, to his days in medical school, his bouts of serious alcoholism, his life as a libertine and openly gay man and, of course, his time with one of the most famous and influential comedy troupes of all time: Monty Python.

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the Boston SNFC! I posted a celebratory blog post over here.

A powerful story based on one family’s survival of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, The Impossible stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor and is directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage). Maria (Watts), Henry (McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her. Based on a true story, The Impossible is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, The Impossible is a journey to the core of the human heart.

Back on January 12th, 2003, the first meeting of the Boston Sunday Night Film Club, started by Heather, occurred. The club has now met 464 times, starting out with The Pianist and most recently seeing Zero Dark Thirty. While the club struggled a bit early on, these days we have a great core of people who come out regularly to watch and discuss movies. We’ve watched as members meet, get married and have children. That’s not to say we don’t have room for more. Feel free to join us any old Sunday, we’re always looking for new friends.

Many, many thanks to all of the people who have helped keep this club alive, especially to the coterie of “pinch-hitters” who have filled in when I’ve been unable to make it.

Below the cut is a list of all of the movies we’ve seen… While you could get all this information by plowing through the archives of this blog, I thought I’d make it easy.

See you Sunday!
