On January 3rd, Dan will be hosting the SNFC at the 3:45p screening of The Hateful Eight at the Somerville. This is part of their limited engagement 70mm “Roadshow”, which features a slightly longer cut of the film, an overture and intermission, and I believe a program. Needless to say, it’s probably a good idea to get tickets in advance. A proper “newsletter” will follow next week, but we thought a heads-up was in order.

As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

In 1962, Francois Truffaut persuaded Alfred Hitchcock to sit with him for a weeklong interview in which the great British director would share with his young admirer the secrets of his cinema. At the time Hitchcock was dismissed by critics as a mere commercial entertainer, but a hugely influential book, Hitchcock/Truffaut, that Truffaut crafted from their conversation forever changed Hitchcocks reputation. Based on the original recordings of their meeting, this fascinating film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plunges us into the world of the creator of Psycho, Vertigo and The Birds. As filmmaker Kent Jones highlights the main topics with a large number of clips (legendary and lesser known) from Hitchcocks films, 10 contemporary cinema greats reiterate the esthetic, technical and narrative questions at the heart of these conversations with Truffaut. And thanks to the original sound recordings, it is as if the book suddenly comes to life: Hitchcock and Truffaut, with their intonations, hesitations and laughter, answer Martin Scorsese, Arnaud Desplechin, David Fincher, Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich and others, resurrecting this fabled one-week encounter and 20-year friendship.

Featuring IN ABSENTIA, THE COMB, STREET OF CROCODILES and the world premiere of Christopher Nolans QUAY. In all new 35mm prints!

American identical twins working in London, stop motion animators Stephen and Timothy Quay (born 1947 in Norristown, Pennsylvania) find their inspiration in Eastern European literature and classical music and art, their work distinguished by its dark humor and an uncanny feeling for color and texture. Masters of miniaturization, they turn their tiny sets into unforgettable worlds suggestive of long-repressed childhood dreams. These three Quay masterworks, selected by director Christopher Nolan, feature broken pencils and lead shavings in IN ABSENTIA (2000; a dazzling piece of work The Guardian); a porcelain dolls explorations of a dreamers imagination in THE COMB (1991; most beautiful of their recent films The New Yorker); and the nightmarish netherworld of STREET OF CROCODILES (1986; their crowning achievement Film Comment); and for the first time ever, QUAY (2015), Nolans new short film revealing the inner workings of the Brothers studio.
Jason Schwartzman portrays Larry, an inebriated sad sack who rides a tide of booze onto the shores of an undiscriminating Quick-Lube. The only bright spot is probably his boss, Lupe (Eleanore Pienta).

Will Larry keep it together long enough to win the girl, provide for his French bulldog (Schwartzman’s real-life dog Arrow), laze about with his friend Major (TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe), and do his cantankerous grandmother (Olympia Dukakis) proud?

7 Chinese Brothers - written & directed by Bob Byington (Somebody Up There Likes Me) - is empathetic in tone, dry in humor. Schwartzman is in every scene and offers one of his most finely nuanced performances.

Barry Crimmins is pissed. His hellfire brand of comedy has rained verbal lightning bolts on American audiences and politicians for decades, yet you’ve probably never heard of him. But once you’ve experienced Bobcat Goldthwait’s brilliant character portrait of him and heard Crimmins’s secret, you will never forget him. From his unmistakable bullish frame came a scathingly ribald stand-up style that took early audiences by force. Through stark, smart observation and judo-like turns of phrase, Crimmins’s rapid-fire comedy was a war on ignorance and complacency in ’80s America at the height of an ill-considered foreign policy. Crimmins discusses another side of his character, revealing in detail a dark and painful past that inspired his life-changing campaign of activism in the hope of saving others from a similar experience. Interviews with comics like Margaret Cho and Marc Maron illustrate Crimmins’s love affair with comedy and his role in discovering and supporting the development of many of today’s stars. As a venerated member of America’s comic community, Crimmins could be your newest national treasure. Just don’t tell him that.

Underworld U.S.A. is among the fiercest, starkest and most unsparing of the many studio films made about organized crime, a popular and perennial topic in Hollywood since the mid-1940s. Like Joseph H. Lewis’ The Undercover Man (1949) or Phil Karlson’s The Brothers Rico (1957) before it, Fuller’s film turns away from the expressionist noir vision of crime long favored in Hollywood and towards a bleaker, barer and menacingly abstract portrayal of criminality. Fuller goes even further, however, by stripping his film of almost any sentimentality and by making even his protagonist deeply unsympathetic and possibly psychopathic. A revenge saga starring a remarkably sinister Cliff Robertson as a failed burglar determined to track down the killers of his criminal father, Underworld U.S.A. follows the young man’s violent path up the crooked ladder of the syndicate that holds a stern grip over vice. For his unsparing depiction of brutal violence and his reduction of character to vicious and brilliantly efficient caricaturessuch as Richard Rust’s ruthless hit manFuller’s hard-hitting film anticipates the blood-soaked yakuza masterpieces of Kinji Fukasaku.

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond.
Brandy Burre had a recurring role on HBOs The Wire when she gave up her career to start a family. When she decides to reclaim her life as an actor, the domestic world shes carefully created crumbles around her. Using elements of melodrama and cinema verite, ACTRESS is both a present tense portrait of a dying relationship and an exploration of a complicated woman, performing the role of herself, in a complex-yet-familiar story.

Artfully combining fly-on-the-wall moments with confessional interview footage and gorgeously composed shots that evoke a Douglas Sirk film, director Robert Greene has created a disarmingly complex documentary. ACTRESS is about more than just its subject though she is a compelling one and what it means to be a middle-aged, working actress today. It also invites us to question the way we create our own narratives and how we are all really actors and actresses in our own daily lives. Its a film about starring in the movie of your life.
