The Somerville Theatre is thrilled to show a new 35mm print of the rarely-screened WINTER KILLS, William Richert’s 1979 black comedy thriller starring Jeff Bridges and John Huston.

This re-release is being presented courtesy of author and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, a longtime Winter Kills fan and champion.

This thinly veiled and hyper-paranoiac take on the JFK assassination stars Bridges as Nick Kegan, scion of a fabulously wealthy and powerful family headed by patriarch Huston (“the real delight of the film” - Canby, New York Times), as a character based on Joe Kennedy. Bridges soon finds himself going down multiple rabbit holes while trying to unravel the conspiracy behind the murder of a U.S. president, his older brother.

Any cursory Lynch devotee will see the connections between his work and Victor Fleming’s classic but Philippe delves deeper with the aid of some of contemporary cinema’s most exciting voices. LYNCH/ OZ features narration and insights from film critic and podcaster Amy Nicholson plus filmmakers Rodney Ascher (Room 237), Karyn Kusama (The Invitation), Benson and Moorhead (Something in the Dirt), and David Lowery (The Green Knight). The film weaves together three stories: colorful boxing coach and ex-drill sergeant Sal Bartolo Jr., son of a renowned 1940s East Boston boxing champ; Naomi Yang herself, learning boxing from trainer Bartolo and reexamining some of her own family’s disturbing history; and schoolteacher Mary Ellen Welch, who in the 1960s mobilized a group of neighborhood women against encroachment from Logan airport, fighting back against an indifferent city government. None of these protagonists are destined to win the Big Fight, but all offer inspiration to anyone determined to stand up for themselves and hold their ground.
