National Library Week kicks off on this day so we’re ‘celebrating’ with this dystopian double feature that highlights the subversive power of fiction. In Michael Radford’s dark and frightening version of George Orwell’s novel, the late, great John Hurt plays Winston Smith, a middle class worker in Big Brother’s society who finds himself unable to quell his rebellious desires towards romantic love and an obsession with an unmodified past.
